Terms of use
Effective date: October 29, 2026 ยท Last updated: October 29, 2026
Short version, which is not the terms: the Stepwell Financial app helps you see and try out your own numbers. It gives education and tools, not personal advice. It doesn't hold or move your money. Your numbers stay on your device, which means you look after the backups. If you turn on the optional lock and forget the passphrase, your saved data can't be recovered unless you have a backup you can open. Read the full terms below.
1. Who we are, and agreeing to these terms
The Stepwell Financial app ("the app") is run by Stepwell Financial ("Stepwell", "we", "us").
These terms are an agreement between you and us about your use of the app. By opening the app and using it, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
These terms work with our Privacy page for the app.
2. Who can use the app
The app is for people who are 18 or older and live in the United States.
If you don't meet these rules, please don't use the app. If we learn that someone doesn't meet them, we may ask them to stop.
The app is built around US dollars and US examples.
3. What the app is, and what it isn't
The Stepwell Financial app gives education and tools, not personal advice. It lets you enter or import your own numbers and see them added up, charted and tried out, with plain-English explanations next to them. It's one set of tools for learning and for looking at your own records.
We don't give financial, tax, legal or investment advice. Nothing in the app, in an explanation, in an example, or in anything we publish is advice for your situation. Nothing in the app tells you what to do with your money. If you want help with your own situation, a qualified professional can help.
The app doesn't move money and we don't hold yours. The app doesn't pay bills, transfer money, make trades or connect to your bank. We don't manage money, and we don't offer bank or investment accounts, loans, investments or other financial services.
Apart from figures marked "Sample data" or "Example inputs", and rates marked "example", numbers in the app are figures you gave it, or worked out from them. A figure about the future is an illustration with its inputs shown. It is not a prediction, and real results vary and aren't guaranteed. Made-up figures are marked "Sample data" or "Example inputs", and rates we supply are marked "example" or sit in a figure marked "Sample data".
If we add features that connect to your bank, move money, or work differently from the above, we will update these terms before we add them.
4. Your data and where it lives
What follows is how the app is designed to work. Our Privacy page for the app has the full detail.
On your device. Your numbers are kept in your browser on the device you use. The app is designed not to send your entries, imports or files anywhere. The app sets no cookies. Your settings, such as your theme and your lock choice, are kept in the same browser storage as your numbers. If you give the app a name to call you, that is kept there too. Anyone who can use this browser profile on this device can see them, so lock your device. Because they stay on your device, we don't receive them and we can't see, restore or delete them for you. Loading the app is an ordinary web visit. The app is served from GitHub Pages. The Privacy page says what the place that serves the app can see.
Optional passphrase lock (off unless you turn it on). If you turn it on, the app is designed to encrypt your saved records on your device with a key made from your passphrase. The key is designed to be kept in memory only, never written to storage. The app locks again after 15 minutes of inactivity by default (you can pick 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes) and when you close the tab. If you forget your passphrase, nobody can recover your data, including us, unless you have a backup you can open. Before you turn the lock on, the app says this and offers you an encrypted backup. There is no "password hint", because a hint stored next to your data would make it easier to guess.
Clearing your browser can delete your data. If you clear your browser's stored data, or your browser or device removes it, your numbers are gone. We can't get them back.
Don't email us your financial details. Please don't send account numbers, balances, passwords or passphrases to us by email or in any message. We won't ask for them. Emails to our contact address are handled as our Privacy page for the app says.
5. Your responsibility: backups, your passphrase and your devices
Backups. You are responsible for backing up your data. The app can export your transactions as a CSV file and make a full backup file. It reminds you to make a backup, in Settings. Keep a copy somewhere you control. Backup files land in places like your Downloads folder and cloud drives. An encrypted backup protects the file if someone else gets it. A plain backup does not. If you restore from a backup, it replaces what is in the app after you confirm. A restore that fails leaves your existing data as it was.
Passphrase. If you turn on the optional lock, you choose a passphrase of at least 12 characters. If you forget it, we can't reset it, and nobody can recover the locked data unless you have a backup you can open. Anyone who has your passphrase can read your data, so don't share it.
Your devices. You're responsible for the devices and browsers you use the app on. If the lock is off, or while the app is unlocked, anyone who can use your browser profile can see your data.
6. Accuracy: your inputs, your imports, and example figures
Every result in the app comes from the numbers you enter or import. If those are wrong, incomplete or out of date, the results will be too. Please check them.
Imports. You can import CSV, OFX and QFX files. The app reads them on your device. It limits the size of files it will read. It shows a preview before it saves anything, with a way to undo the whole import. If a date or amount can't be read, it shows the line as an error and doesn't guess. Different banks and programs write these files differently, so an import can still miss lines or read them in an unexpected way. Check the preview against your own records.
Calculations. Where the app works something out, such as a total, a difference or an illustration, it shows its inputs and describes its method. We work to make the arithmetic correct, but we can't promise the app is free of errors.
Examples and sample data. Figures marked "Sample data", "Example inputs", "example" or "illustration" show how a tool works. They are not about you and they are not a prediction.
7. Acceptable use
Please use the app for its purpose: looking at and learning from your own numbers. You agree not to:
- break the law while using the app;
- use another person's numbers without their permission;
- try to get into other people's data or our systems, or test the app's security without our written permission. If you find a security problem, tell us at the contact address in section 15;
- overload, disrupt or interfere with the app or the place that serves it;
- upload or import files meant to harm the app, your device or anyone else's;
- copy, scrape or rebuild the app, or take it apart to get its source code;
- remove or hide our name or notices, or suggest that Stepwell Financial backs your own product or service;
- use the app's results to run a business that handles other people's money, or to act for other people on their finances; or
- help anyone else do any of the above.
If you break these rules, we may block your access. We'll say why where we reasonably can.
8. Your content
Your numbers are yours. What you enter or import into the app, and the backups and exports you make from it, belong to you. We don't claim ownership of them.
Your entries stay on your device and aren't sent to us, so we don't receive or use them, and we don't need a license to them.
Messages and ideas. If you email us, we use your message only to reply to you and to fix what you wrote about, as the Privacy page says. If you suggest an idea, we may use the idea without paying you or naming you.
Keep your own data in good shape. You're responsible for what you put in the app, including having the right to use any files you import.
9. Our content and our license to you
Our content. The app, its design, wording, explanations, lessons, charts and software belong to Stepwell Financial or the people who license them to us. The Stepwell Financial name and wordmark are ours.
License to you. While you follow these terms, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for your own non-commercial use. We keep all rights we haven't expressly given you.
Ads and links. If we ever show ads or use affiliate links, we'll label them clearly.
10. The app may change or stop
We're building the app in stages. We may add, change, pause or remove features, or stop offering the app, at any time. We don't promise that the app or any feature will always be available, or that it'll work without interruptions or errors, or in every browser.
If we stop the app. If we stop offering the app or a feature, we'll try to give you notice where we reasonably can. Your data is on your device. Use export and backup to keep your numbers.
You may stop using the app at any time. You can delete your data in the app with "Delete all", which asks you to type a word to confirm. We may block access for the reasons in section 7.
11. Disclaimers
The app is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no promises about the app. We don't promise that it is accurate, complete, up to date, free of errors or viruses, always available, or right for what you want to use it for. We don't promise that the results in the app will match your own records, your tax forms or what a bank, lender or government agency shows. You use the app at your own risk and use your own judgment.
Nothing in the app is financial, tax, legal or investment advice, and we're not responsible for decisions you make using it. You can talk to a qualified professional about your situation.
Some places don't allow certain promises to be left out, so some of this may not apply to you.
12. Limits on our responsibility
To the extent the law allows:
- We're not responsible for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive losses, or for lost profits, lost savings, lost data or loss of business, from your use of the app or not being able to use it. This includes losses from lost or unreadable data, a forgotten passphrase, a cleared browser, an import that was read in an unexpected way, or a decision you made using a figure in the app.
- Our total responsibility to you for everything connected with the app is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the 12 months before the claim.
- Nothing in these terms limits responsibility that the law doesn't allow us to limit.
13. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
Talk to us first. If you have a problem with the app or these terms, please email us at the address in section 15 and give us a chance to put it right.
Disputes will be heard in the state and federal courts in Pinellas County, Florida.
14. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. We'll put the new terms on this page with a new "last updated" date. If you keep using the app after a change applies, you accept the new terms. If you don't accept them, you can stop using the app and delete your data.
15. Contact
Email: hello@stepwellfinancial.com. We're not accepting email yet. This note comes out when we are.
16. General terms
- If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce a term right away, we haven't given it up.
- These terms are the whole agreement between you and us about the app. They don't replace a separate agreement for another product or page. Our Privacy page explains how we handle personal information.
- You can't transfer your rights under these terms to someone else. We can transfer ours, for example if the business changes hands.
- Notices to you may be given in the app, or on this page.
- Headings are for reading ease.
